U.S. and China agree to sign Paris climate agreement; The U.K. produces 25 percent of its electricity from renewables

POV: Power Breakfast

A nearly daily update of energy-related news:

  • In an effort to lead and encourage other countries to officially sign the Paris climate agreement, the U.S. and China have announced that they will formally sign the agreement on April 22, the first day they are able to do so. In order for the agreement to take effect, it must be signed by at least 55 countries accounting for 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. These two countries emit 40 percent of the world’s emissions; their commitment to the agreement would put the deal more than two-thirds of the way to its goal. Last December, 195 countries agreed to sign the agreement in principle.
  • Renewable power in the U.K. accounted for 24.7 percent of the total electricity produced in 2015; an increase of 5.6 percent from 2014. Electricity generation from renewables increased 29 percent from 64.7 TWh in 2014 to 83.3 TWh in 2015, setting a record for the country.
