Today, we join the U.S. and more than 193 countries in observation of the 46th annual Earth Day. Throughout the year, EFH, Luminant and TXU Energy work to give back to our planet by donating and planting trees in our communities, cleaning river banks, hosting electronic recycling drives, offering renewable/solar energy plans and achieving Energy Star designation for eight consecutive years at our downtown headquarters – Energy Plaza.
In fact, Energy Plaza was the first U.S. building named a Certified Sustainable Property by the Institute of Real Estate Management, was designated a BOMA 360 Performance Building in 2015 and was named the Regional Outstanding Building of the Year award in the Earth category by the Building Owners and Managers Association. This award is the most comprehensive program of its kind in the real estate industry,” said Bob Keith, senior director of facilities and real estate for EFH. “This shows the real estate community and potential clients that we’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and are serious about sustainability.”
Additionally, for more than 40 years, Luminant has set the standard in land reclamation, restoring nearly 80,000 acres, planting over 38 million trees and creating or enhancing more than 5,100 acres of wetlands, ponds and stream channels. Last year, Luminant reclaimed more than 2,300 acres and planted over 1 million trees.
To celebrate Earth Day 2016, our colleagues at TXU Energy are partnering with Papa Johns in Houston and are expected to deliver as many as 17,000 tree seedlings today. As part of Earth Day 2015, TXU Energy and Papa Johns delivered 12,000 trees. TXU Energy will also be at Fair Park this weekend to celebrate Earth Day Texas 2016 by giving out trees to attendees and highlighting the company’s solar energy and renewable plans. Also this weekend, the Texas Trees Foundation will be hosting dozens of Girl Scouts at the TXU Energy Urban Tree Farm and Education Center so that they can earn their Communit-Tree Patch.
We thank everyone who donates their time or contributes in any way to cleaning and protecting the cities and communities in which we live, play and work.
