The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, and it is estimated that on that one day alone, more than 1 million trees were planted. Almost 150 years later, all 50 states and numerous other countries come together to celebrate Arbor Day (albeit in various days and/or months to account for local climates and holidays). Whether that be in the form of “Greenery Day” in Japan, “The National Festival of Tree Planting” in India or “National Forest Week” in Canada, trees play a vital part in making our communities look and feel more like home.
In Texas we celebrate Arbor Day on the first Friday in November, but the national celebration of Arbor Day is on April 29. At EFH, Luminant and TXU Energy, we do our part to celebrate trees throughout the year. In 2015 alone, Luminant planted more than 1 million trees, and the company and its predecessors have planted more than 38 million trees over the past 40 years.
Additionally, did you know that our colleagues at TXU Energy planted their 200,000th tree in 2015? They also participated in a variety of activities as part of Earth Day 2016, like delivering 17,000 tree seedlings in and around Houston and hosting the Girl Scouts at the TXU Energy Urban Tree Farm and Education Center, which helped the Scouts earn their Communi-Tree patch by planting nearly 80 trees!
