A nearly daily update of energy-related news:
- The DOE is funding 33 small businesses in 20 different states with $6.7 million in funding to accelerate clean energy technology. As part of the pilot project, an additional $13 million in vouchers will be awarded to small businesses to use on collaborative research with the country’s national labs. Projects may include: advanced manufacturing, building and vehicle technologies, fuels cells and a range of renewable energy sources.
- Declining natural gas prices, slowing growth for electricity demand and increasing incentives for renewables are just three of the major factors that have contributed to a change in the country’s fuel mix. The EIA compared the fuel mix figures from 1990 and 2014 and found that coal’s share of electricity generation capacity decreased 28 percent, natural gas-fired electric generation went from 19 percent in 1990 to 40 percent in 2014 and electricity generation from wind grew from 0.2 percent in 1990 to 6 percent in 2014. From these figures, the EIA predicts that the share of electricity generated from natural gas and renewable sources will increase through 2040, while electricity generation from coal and petroleum will decline.
