DOE funds $21 million for solar energy; Demand response programs save electricity during peak times

  • The U.S. Department of Energy announced $21 million in new funding to help expand access to solar energy to all Americans. Of the $21 million, $13 million will help states develop a strategy to maximize solar energy and gain the knowledge to overcome barriers to entry.  The remaining $8 million will support research on solar energy innovation and technology adoption patterns.
  • In 2014, there were about 9.3 million customers participating in demand response programs of which 93 percent were in the residential sector. Research released by the EIA shows that demand response programs can save the average residential customer approximately 100 KW (about $40 annually).
