Natural gas growing faster than fossil fuel alternatives; France to pave 621 miles of road with solar panels

POV: Power Breakfast

A nearly daily update of energy-related news:

  • Use of natural gas is set to grow faster than all other sources of energy in the U.S. and Europe with more power plants choosing to be fueled by gas. Throughout the past 10 years, electricity from coal has decreased by 25 percent while electricity from gas has increased approximately 35 percent. This has helped to decrease greenhouse gas emission in the U.S.  to a 27-year low.
  • The French minister of Ecology and Energy announced that over the next five years, France will pave 621 miles of road with solar panels to be called “the Wattway.” A French road-building company and the National Institute of Solar Energy have developed solar panels which are a quarter of an inch thick and designed to be installed on top of existing roadways. The panels are made out of a thin polycrystalline silicon film and coated with resin to strengthen them and make the panels less slippery so that they can stand up to heavy traffic and all types of weather.
