A nearly daily update of energy-related news:
- In 2015, solar power developers added a record 7.3 gigawatts of capacity, an increase of 17 percent from 2014. The fastest-growing segment to install photovoltaic systems was the residential sector with a 66 percent increase year over year. Total U.S. solar installations now exceed 25 gigawatts, up from only 2 gigawatts in 2010.
- According to the EIA, the mix of fuels to generate electricity in the U.S. has changed. An example includes coal which in 1990 accounted for 42 percent of U.S. electricity generation capacity and produced more than half of the total electricity supply; now coal’s share of electricity generation capacity has decreased to 28 percent and accounts for 39 percent of electricity generation. Many factors have contributed to this new energy mix including declining natural gas prices, a slowing demand for electricity and governmental regulations.
