The oil industry using solar; Utility business models to change

  • In Oman, the oil industry is using solar energy to extract crude oil from the ground. The process being used is called “enhanced oil recovery.” This process involves using steam made from solar energy to loosen thick oil and make it easier to pump. By using steam instead of natural gas, carbon emissions and gas consumption can be cut by up to 80 percent.
  • According to a survey by Utility Dive, three percent of utility executives do not feel that their company’s business model should change leaving plenty of room to disrupt the status quo; but the question remains how that will be done. Of future technologies, 66 percent of utility executives said say they are investing in utility-scale solar and wind, 64 percent quoted demand-side management while 50 percent said distributed generation.
