A nearly daily update of energy-related news:
- U.S. officials are reviewing two mining projects that would uncover 644 million tons of coal from public lands. This new review comes after the administration’s January 15 moratorium halting federal coal sales. While the moratorium allows coal sale applications to be reviewed, it blocks their final approval until a review of the federal coal program can be completed.
- The current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon said that clean energy is not growing fast enough to curb greenhouse gas emissions and meet the goals set at the Paris climate talks earlier this year. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, global investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency increased by 4 percent in 2015 despite of the slump in oil prices.
- Texas leads the nation in planned wind power growth. In AWEA’s end of year report, Texas added 3,615 MW of wind power in 2015, 42 percent of the new wind capacity added across the country (8,598 new MW nationally).
