NREL developing cybersecurity system; Underwater balloons for energy storage

A nearly daily update of energy-related news:

  • The NREL is developing a new cybersecurity system to protect the U.S. power grid from attacks. Communication and control devices will be added to the power grid to increase awareness of anomalies in the power grid by utilities.
  • Several organizations and research groups are looking to balloons tied to the seabed as the answer to renewable energy storage for the electrical grid. The method, named Underwater Compressed Air Energy Storage (UW-CAES), is the process of storing compressed air in balloon-like vessels on the seabed. Further testing and research is needed before a large-scale center is built.
