Electric grid put to test; New entrant to the microgrid market

A nearly daily update of energy-related news:

  • An increasingly amount of data, wireless devices and electronic devices are progressively putting the electric grid to the test. Currently, the number of digital bits in existence doubles every two years and is expected to continue to grow. Additionally, the “Internet of Things” is driving the demand for more data. This includes machine-to-machine communications of which there are about 20 billion currently communicating with each other; this is also expected to grow to 30 billion by 2020.
  • Hitachi, a $81.3 billion global company, has entered the North American microgrid market. The company will act as a project developer and will also offer financing through Hitachi Capital. Hitachi is currently working on 11 NY Prize projects and approximately 13 microgrids in Canada.
