API and ANGA merge; Global trade of coal declined; Natural gas to power cars

POV: Power Breakfast

A nearly daily update of energy-related news:

  • Effective January 1, 2016, the American Petroleum Institute (API) and America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA) will become one single organization. ANGA will be combined into API and all ANGA members will become full members of API. Current ANGA President, Marty Durbin will lead a new Market Development Group at API.
  • According to the EIA, global trade of coal declined for the first time in more than 20 years. Reasons for this decline include lowered demand by China as the country is taking measures to support its nation’s coal industry. While China is reducing its demand, India is increasing its demand. However, India is also looking to increase domestic production.
  • Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have created new technology to fit more natural gas into a small space that could lead to the development for smaller and lighter vehicle gas tanks. Currently, there are more than 150,000 vehicles running on natural gas, mainly trucks and buses due to natural gas constraints. Read more about this on The Wall Street Journal.
