Luminant Ready for Summer Demand

Power plants, mines spend spring priming to power Texas through the summer heat

After what seemed like never-ending rain, Texas temperatures are finally heating up. And Luminant power plants and mines have been gearing up to meet summer’s peak electricity demands.

The weather significantly impacts our companies’ business, so we’ve kept a keen eye on this spring’s record-breaking rain and cooler temps and how they impact electricity consumption:

With the mild temps and drought behind us and the critical summer months ahead, Luminant leaders have teams focused on the importance of safety, reliability and communication to meet the needs of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid and Texas consumers. At a recent summer readiness meeting, directors at Luminant’s power plants and mines across the state report that their units are ready.

Nearly all of Luminant’s lignite and natural gas plants have wrapped up their planned spring maintenance outages, which involve safely bringing generating units off line, performing required maintenance to address plant efficiency, safety and reliability, and then returning the units to service. The recent heavy rains have replenished all the plants’ supporting cooling water reservoirs to normal or adequate levels.

Luminant mining employees spent the spring focused on comprehensive inspections and stockpiling fuel in anticipation of the high demand summer months.
