A nearly daily round-up of news for your consideration:
- The Electric Reliability Council of Texas projects the state could set a power consumption record this summer, but the electric grid will be ready with 77,000 megawatts of power generation available. “Looking ahead, ERCOT projects a reserve margin of 17 percent for 2016 and 18.5 percent in 2017. By 2017, it jumps to 21.4 percent,” the Dallas Business Journal writes.
- The U.S. Supreme Court will consider whether the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission overstepped its authority with a demand response rule that encourages big energy consumers to lower power use at peak times in exchange for price breaks. Trade groups representing utilities and power suppliers challenged the regulation they say “operated at the retail level and so was beyond the reach of federal power” and dramatically distorts electricity markets, The New York Times reports. The court will consider the case when the next term begins in October.
