FERC looks to protect grid from solar storms; Power generators raise natural gas demand; Analysis predicts Texas next for market reform

POV: Power Breakfast

A nearly daily round-up of news for your consideration:

  • The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission voted to set new rules for utilities to build in systems to protect the grid from solar flare disturbances, The Hill reports. “The proposal would require transmission systems to assess their vulnerability to solar storms, figure out their acceptable voltage states during those storms and reassess their vulnerability every five years.”
  • Natural gas prices hit a nearly four-month high thanks in part to rising demand from power generators, The Wall Street Journal reports. “The [Energy Information Administration] estimates that gas-fired power will account for a smaller percentage of U.S. power generation later in the year, falling to 28% in December, from 32% in May. The EIA expects coal’s share to rise to 38% from 33% in the same time span.”
  • A Rocky Mountain Institute analysis says Texas could be next in line for electricity market reform, based on a proposed report outline from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. From the analysis:

“It forecasted solar-plus-storage economics outcompeting grid power for increasing and eventually substantial portions of customers’ load in the years ahead. That underscored a growing urgency for changes in distributed energy resource (DER) pricing, utility business models, and/or regulatory structures to allow for better consumer value and grid participation of DERs.”
