DOE to make grid modernization recommendation; FERC working to address Clean Power Plan reliability concerns

  • The Department of Energy’s forthcoming recommendation for modernizing the country’s power grid may include “boosting the system’s ability to store electricity for use at peak times, increasing the use of real-time data to respond faster to outages, and making the grid better able to operate seamlessly with a mix of conventional fuels such as natural gas and the more intermittent energy of renewables such as solar or wind,” Reuters reports.
  • The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is working on recommendations for the Environmental Protection Agency on adjusting its Clean Power Plan to reduce reliability concerns, but the newest commissioner expects the rule will be upheld in court challenges. Public Power reports Colette Honorable “offered a positive assessment of what has been called a “reliability safety valve” but noted concerns about suggestions FERC evaluate state compliance plans prior to EPA approval to ensure that those plans would not create reliability issues.
