Going green doesn’t mean Texas electricity customers have to give up popular features such as cash back and free electricity.

TXU Energy recently introduced TXU Energy GreenUpSM, which can turn nearly any TXU Energy residential electricity plan into a 100 percent green plan backed by Texas wind.

Through TXU Energy GreenUp, the company purchases Renewable Energy Credits on behalf of participating customers. Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) ensure that an equal amount of green electricity is put onto the Texas power grid for every kilowatt of electricity consumed in the home or business associated with those credits. Each credit is unique and can only be used once.

Purchasing RECs helps support investment and construction of renewable energy projects in Texas, which generate energy that has a lower environmental impact than other power sources.

With TXU Energy GreenUp, existing TXU Energy customers can keep their preferred plans and benefits, including Cash Back Loyalty Rewards and Right Time PricingSM while also getting a 100 percent offset for every kilowatt of electricity they use. New TXU Energy customers can choose almost any plan and TXU Energy GreenUp for the same benefits.

Between 2008 and 2012, TXU Energy retired more than 15 million megawatt-hours of renewable energy credits. That’s enough electricity to power more than 200,000 average Texas homes a year in each of those five years.
