Congressman calls for federal government to tap nuclear energy's potential; Justice Department says states can't preempt EPA climate rule

  • Nuclear energy has not lived up to its potential in the U.S. and it’s time the federal government partner with those pursuing improvements to the technology, Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX 21st District) writes in The Hill. From his remarks:

    “Political meddling, costly red tape and a shifting regulatory landscape have jeopardized America’s energy security. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the federal government’s treatment of safe, reliable and clean nuclear energy. …  Nuclear energy has nearly limitless potential. But developing advanced energy technology requires consistent policy, long-term investment and patience.”

  • Justice Department attorneys told an appeals court that 12 states cannot challenge the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed carbon emissions rule for power plants until it is made final later this year, The Hill reports. “The states also cannot sue against a 2010 court settlement because it did not obligate the agency to write the regulation, it said.”
