Shale gas boom paying off for utilities; Global coal demand rising; EPA sets coal ash disposal rules

POV: Power Breakfast

A nearly daily round-up of news for your consideration:

  • Cheaper fuel costs brought about by the shale gas boom are spurring more industrial demand for electricity and creating more business for utilities, according to Wall Street Daily.
  • “Global coal prices are falling and coal demand is rising,” according to the International Energy Agency. According to The Hill:

“The IEA expects that coal demand will continue growing through 2019 by more than 2 percent per year. Perhaps even more astounding is the IEA’s projection that by 2019 or so, on a BTU basis, global coal use will exceed global oil use.”

  • The Environmental Protection Agency announced the first federal guidelines for disposing of coal ash, calling for power plants to meet minimum standards, monitor for leaks and publicly report inspections, The New York Times reports, while reinforcing the growing business of recycling the material into secondary products.
