Summer demand down; Texas power prices below average; more Texans choosing green power

powerbreakfastA nearly daily round-up of news for your consideration:

  • Milder summer temperatures have resulted in less demand on the Texas electric grid, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. From the Dallas Morning News article:

“Consider that North Texas has only had five 100-degree days this summer and didn’t hit that mark until July 13. It’s the first time Dallas-Fort Worth hasn’t hit 100 degrees before July since 2007. That cooler June resulted in less power consumption as grid demand declined about 500,000 MW from the same period in 2013.”

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics says U.S. consumers are paying record-high electricity prices, but rates in Texas were at least 15 percent below the national average per kilowatt hour, KTRH News Radio reports.
  • More Texans are choosing green electricity plans than consumers in other states with deregulated electricity markets, according to a report by Choose Energy, a California-based company that helps consumers navigate deregulated markets. While supply is most plentiful in the state, green energy continues to be more expensive, Newsweek reports.
