Population growing more urban; electric vehicles offer growth opportunity; NRC nominations

powerbreakfastA nearly daily round-up of news for your consideration:

  • More than 53 percent of the world’s population lives in cities and that number is expected to grow to 70 percent by 2050, with China and India leading the march, Forbes reports. From the article:

“This historic transformation will play the main role in the world’s energy future. City dwellers tend to have higher incomes and better access to energy services, largely why higher electrification rates in cities are associated with more economic opportunity. With over 80% of the world still living in undeveloped nations, the energy demand on the horizon is massive.”

  • Better batteries and faster charging are transforming the electric vehicle sector and presenting great growth opportunity for utilities. From the Greentech Media column:

“By proactively accelerating the widespread adoption of EVs and plug-in hybrids, the electric industry could consume a significant portion of the revenue from the transportation energy market.  A recent report from the United Nations suggested that EVs could make up 100 percent of vehicle sales in the U.S. within fifteen years, assuming an aggressive support scenario.”

  • The White House is set to nominate Jeff Baran and Stephen Burns to openings on the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Wall Street Journal reports.
