Moving coal by rail; Senate hearing on EPA GHG rule; House asks EPA for documents

  • More coal might move by rail in the near future, due to aging locks on the nation’s river systems that could divert barge shipments, Progressive Railroading projects in an examination of the optimal infrastructure to accommodate coal consumption needs.
  • The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will hold the first hearing on the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed carbon emissions rules on July 23, with testimony from EPA Chief Gina McCarthy, The Hill reports.
  • House Republicans have asked the EPA to turn over various documents related to how it wrote the proposed carbon emissions rules by July 23 or face a subpoena. The Hill reports since the initial request was made in March the EPA has withheld the documents to protect the “confidentiality and independence of agency deliberations” of an ongoing regulatory action.
  • The Texas Solar Power Association has formed with member businesses focused on the retail and wholesale electric market to help advance the development of solar power generation in the state, Business Facilities reports.
