Seven-million-pound dragline rolls into new Kosse Mine area

Using a transportation method similar to how NASA moves space shuttles, the enormous D-52 dragline recently completed a seven-mile journey to Luminant’s Kosse Mine.

Using a method similar to how NASA moves space shuttles, the D-52 dragline recently moved to a new section of Luminant’s Kosse Mine.

Another Luminant mega machine makes the big move.

With a new section of Kosse Mine set to open soon, the mine’s D-52 dragline, an enormous earth excavator, recently completed a nearly seven-mile trek on 30 interconnected trailers to the mine’s Echo area. The dragline’s three-day journey also included a road crossing along State Highway 7.

“D-52 was essentially moved on a 520-wheel vehicle controlled by one operator using a remote control,” said Brad Gadt, Luminant heavy equipment outage and relocations manager. “This was another successful transport effort thanks to our team’s hard work, attention to detail and dedication to safety.”

In addition to the recent move of Big Brown Mine’s D-13 dragline, this is the third dragline to be transported in North America using this technique. Preparations are underway for two final dragline moves at Martin Lake Mines this June.

Did you know? NASA uses a similar transportation method to move space shuttles.
