Power Breakfast for May 5, 2014

  • New York State is exploring decentralizing power production and using its electric utilities to coordinate distribution of electricity produced by a multitude of smaller entities, the New York Times reports. From the article:

“The underlying idea is that the existing system of regulation does not encourage the utilities or independent parties to produce a cleaner, more efficient energy grid.”

  • National research laboratories are devising safer, more efficient nuclear reactors, despite the uncertain political and economic environment, Forbes writes:

“If a global goal is to generate electricity using carbon free fuels, then nuclear energy cannot be overlooked. Researchers and developers therefore want to create the safest and most efficient models they can and to make them commercially available and widely used. In conjunction with industry, the national labs say that they can knock down the barriers and enable the deployment of both advanced nuclear reactors and small modular reactors.”

  • More than 8.66 gigawatts of new wind power is expected to enter the ERCOT electric market by 2016, according to ERCOT’s latest Capacity, Demand and Reserves report.
  • Deliveries of coal and gas to power plants in the U.S. were down in 2013, reports Coal Valley News. In Texas, deliveries to ERCOT increased 2 percent driven by a nearly 137 percent increase in deliveries to CPS Energy’s J.T. Deely plant in Bexar County.
