Across the country, boxes and trucks are getting loaded as the biggest relocation season of the year gets underway. People moving into Texas – and recent graduates renting on their own for the first time – will find a retail electricity market here that is unlike any other in the country.
Because of retail competition, consumers have a wide range of options in most of Texas. Where most cities around the country are served by a single utility that generates, transmits and sells retail electricity service, the competitive Texas market is divided into three: generators, transmission and distribution utilities, and retailers. Generators compete to sell wholesale power to retailers, who subsequently compete to sell retail power to consumers. Savvy consumers get the benefits of all of that competition.
For more than five years, the independent Annual Baseline Assessment of Competition in Canada and the United States (ABACCUS) report has ranked Texas as the most competitive market in North America. The report, by the energy consulting firm DEFG LLC, says Texas delivers better prices, more options and greater innovation than any other market that’s open to competition among retailers.
