Reclamation recognition received from Railroad Commission

The Railroad Commission of Texas honored Luminant Tuesday with the 2014 Texas Reclamation Award.  In a ceremony prior to the commissioners’ regular meeting in Austin, Chairman Barry Smitherman called Luminant’s winning entry “quite extraordinary.” Commissioners Christi Craddick and David Porter also congratulated the company.

Luminant was honored for its unique approach to reclaiming the B Mining Area in Freestone County, transforming the final 1.6-mile-long mining pit into a 112 surface-acre lake, which provides a rare opportunity for genetic research of largemouth bass through a partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

“The reclamation process described in your submittal truly represents a commitment to reclamation that leaves mined land in a condition that will benefit wildlife and human occupation for generations and more,” the Commission’s award letter states.

The project also earned the Interstate Mining Compact Commission’s 2014 National Mine Reclamation Award in the Coal Category, which will be presented in April. IMCC Executive Director Gregory Conrad called Luminant’s efforts “representative of the commitment to responsible mining and reclamation practices demonstrated by the industry.”
